I also planted four broccoli plants and three parsley plants. I will be planting some more radishes, onions, and beets at a later time.

When it gets warmer, the cucumber and bean seeds will go in the ground, as well as the pepper, tomato, and squash plants. Like usual, I neglected it toward the end of the summer. This spring I did harvest an onion and dried beans as I prepped for this year's garden, though!

A week ago (March 27), I started my geranium seeds and the free marigold seeds I was sent with them. I ordered the seeds from Pase seeds. They were sprouting within 3 days! wow. These are supposed to be seeds that are on the slow side. I planted them in Micracle Grow potting soil. Now, I need to get my light out so they don't get too leggy.

The rest of my seeds came from SeedSavers.org. On about March 29, I planted two rows of each kind of lettuce, Red Velvet and Slobolt. Both are loos-leaf type. I also planted about 3 rows of Strawberry Spinach (a.k.a. Strawberry Blight) and a long row of Purple Top While Globe turnips. On April 2, I planted Danver's carrots and watered everything.

I still have seeds for Japanese Climbing cucumbers and Climbing French pole beans. SeedSavers will be sending me tomato and pepper transplants when the weather is warmer, about mid-May.

I'm planning on paying closer attention to my compost bins this year. They need more water than I previously gave them. Also, I want to turn them once a week. One bin has some compost on the bottom. The other was started a bit later, so nothing too great yet.

That's all for now!

Garden is started!

Yesterday, I finally had my first harvest... before I even planted anything! Last year, I let the lettuce go to seed and it self-seeded all over the garden, including in the gravel paths. So, since there was nothing wrong with the lettuce in the paths, I had the kids help me pick all the lettuce on the ground. I got TONS of lettuce already! We picked rhubarb, too. The onions I didn't pick last year are growing strong. I'll have to eat at least some of them, though. As usual, I slacked off towards the end of summer.

This year, I want to buy or build some compost bins. I think one thing that is lacking is compost. I don't like using chemical fertilizers and the composted cow manure bags I buy don't excite me, either. I worry that they have chemicals in the poo.

So, we'll start composting and maybe by the end of summer, we'll start to have some compost to use in the garden. I know it will take a while to get going. I'm even thinking of composting table scraps. Not sure what the family will think about that.

Last year, I started my seeds too soon, so I'm going to hold off a bit on those this year. I think she'll have a tummy ache.

Berries, berries

Yesterday, I managed to make it back into the garden. The lettuce is bolting, especially the green lettuce. Tomatoes are growing well, lots of green fruit. I can't wait for the first tomato harvest!

I let the peas go, unfortunately. This must have been a bad year for peas. They didn't fill out early and when they did they were bitter, not sweet. Maybe I can use them dried for something like split pea soup. Broccoli isn't doing the best. Some is starting to flower, so I need to harvest. The heads are small. Cauliflower plants are still alive but I see no signs of edible portions growing. Beans are climbing, climbing, climbing. I don't see any flowers, yet. Basil and cilantro are going nowhere. I guess it is too shady under the tomatoes. Peppers are so-so. There are a couple plants that are doing ok. Nasturtiums are doing nicely, at least the ones in the garden. The ones in my front landscaping are sad, as are most of my annual landscape plants. I'm letting a few of the volunteer sunflowers grow because of this.

I picked a handful of carrots. I could probably pick some more, but a few were tiny. I don't know if they would have grown faster if they had more light (they are in a higher-walled box with the tomatoes this year). I would think if it were hot, that would be a better place, though.

Carrots

I also picked a bunch of mulberries from the trees in the back yard. This is a good mulberry year. The ripe berries seem to be more consistently sweet and there are actually some still left on the tree. My garden (partially situated under the tree) smells bad and you really don't want to walk barefooted there thanks to all the fermenting berries.

I also picked some raspberries. The kids went wild over the berries. My son wanted to have all the raspberries to himself!

The yellow/green balls in the picture below are ground cherries. I wasn't sure when to pick these, but I think I know now. I think the yellow ones are ripe and the green ones aren't.

Raspberries, mulberries, and ground cherries

The ground cherries are contained in a pod or a hull, shown below, which reminds me of a tomatillo. The fruit is very loose in the pod. I think when the pod turns from green to yellow, it is time to pick the fruit. At that point, the pod comes off the vine easily. Some were even already on the ground. The fruit has a taste that is kind of like a sweet tomato, but a little more fruity than a tomato. It has a little too much of the tomato-y acid taste to pair these with other fruits, though. I'm not totally sure what to do with these. Maybe I'll put them in a salad.

Ground cherry pod

Growing, growing

I've been picking greens for fresh salads. Very nice. I haven't attempted lettuce in a long time and this is working out very well. Not many of the plants thrived, but I've still gotten enough for us to eat at dinner. I just pick the larger outer leaves and let the rest continue growing. I'm kind of glad the lettuce hasn't taken hold all that great, because it looks like the ground cherry plants are going to take over that box!

I also have been harvesting radishes. Picked five more yesterday and in the process, I noticed that the bean plants are already about three inches tall! Sneaky!

The pepper plants are alive, but not going gangbusters. A couple more cauliflower plants are on the way out. Broccoli going strong. It seems that they are leggy, though. I wonder if the soil there is not rich enough.

I see some flowers on the peas. Tomatoes are growing well and carrot tops look good. I'd guess we'll have carrots to eat in a week or two.

Last night, I picked my first nasturtium from the garden. It was a beautiful deep orange. My son and I ate it! :) He got a kick out of eating the flower.

The weeds are staying in check so far. The bean box and the broccoli/cauliflower box were inundated with mulberry saplings. I've been trying to keep up with them a bit, but there are sooo many of them.

More radishes!

Yesterday we harvested several more radishes. (Or was it Thursday? I think it was Thursday.) I also planted some more onions and lettuce. The lettuce hasn't been very reliable coming up. I am ready to harvest some of the first one. In fact, I'm going to do that for supper, now that I think about it!

The carrots are growing well. Tomatoes and ground cherries look very healthy. Broccoli and cauliflower also look healthy. The peas are growing well.

I noticed that several of the pepper plants are still alive. 9 of them! So I planted seeds to fill in the few gaps left there.

I planted cilantro and basil in the middle of the tomato plot. Also, we planted the pole beans. It looks like some of the marigolds I planted in the bean patch are still alive. I should seed more of those. My son helped plant the beans. And it actually WAS help! I went and made a divot for each seed and he dropped on in every hole. Then I went back and covered up each one. He did a great job and didn't miss a hole, some of which weren't that easy to see due to the radishes growing nearby.

Since one of the cauliflowers died and one of the broccolis had a twin growing with it, I separated the twins and put one where the cauliflower was. We'll see if that takes, especially because I forgot to water afterward.

I should really water more often. We get forecasts that include rain and it often doesn't materialize.

No more seedlings!

About a week ago, I planted the four tomato plants and the two ground cherries that arrived from Seed Savers. They were very nice plants. Very large and strong. They are still going strong. Tonight it might frost or get close to it, so I hope they don't die!

Today, I planted the cosmos and nasturium and three or four dahlia seedlings in the front. In the garden in the pole bean bed, I planted the marigolds I had started. I also harvested the first two radishes. Yummy.

A few of the pepper plants might make it, but many have not made it. I'm pretty sure I started them too early. If I had started them later, they wouldn't have been in their little pots with too little sun for so long.

Broccoli and cauliflower are doing well. Many of the carrots that I had written off are now growing. Also, the onions I had planted in the garden are now coming up. I guess the soil just had to get warm enough.

I need to plant the beans, some basil, and some cilantro. This morning, we harvested some rhubarb and made some rhubarb crisp for a potluck. Turned out pretty good! It was gone by the end of the potluck, which is always a good sign.

A few of the very earliest lettuce plants are starting to get bigger. Nothing ready to harvest yet. The peas are growing nicely. The raspberries are taking over the world. I think it's a plot! They are squeezing out one of the rhubarb plants... a plant which itself is like a weed and sometimes has its own plot for world domination. There is even a raspberry plant growing on the ground in a garden path. Weird.

Will the peppers survive?

Yesterday, I put in the peppers. They were getting very yellow. So, I don't know if they will survive. I put in four of the Alma on the west side of the box and 8 or 9 of the Napolean Sweet in the rest of the box. I miscalculated and left some room, so I also planted two of the nasturtium in the corner of the box.

A few, very few, of the carrots are coming up. The broccoli is doing well. I think the cauliflower is living, but not thriving. Radishes are doing well. I think I will harvest some rhubarb soon.

When I planted the peppers, I took them completely out of the peat pot. Some didn't have much of any of the starter soil on them.

The nasturtiums were in the coir pots and I didn't have scissors or a knife. So, I pulled the plants out of the pots. One of them lost a lot of roots. It will be interesting to see how they do.

More seeds, broccoli

There was a break in the rain, so I was able to go out and do some more work in the garden.
I planted some more lettuce seeds and reseeded some that didn't seem to be growing yet. There are a few plants I can tell are lettuce. I think I only saw one of the redleaf variety. The onions don't seem to have germinated or at least survived. The ones I transplanted seem to still be living. The cauliflower is still living. The carrots don't seem to have survived. Audra mentioned that you could germinate carrots under a board, so I made a new line of each type and covered with boards. We'll see if the kids stay away. I also put out eight of the broccoli seedlings from Audra. I planted them in up to their first leaf branches.

Radishes are growing. Some didn't germinate. I put down a new line of each. I like radish seeds. So easy to see!

In my seedling trays, the flowers just haven't germinated very nicely. The peppers and cauliflower did so well. 5 out of 6 nasturtiums did well. I reseeded the flowers that hadn't sprouted in the coir tray. Only a few came up in the peat pellets. So, I used the rest of the nasturtium seeds and reseeded all the peat pellets that didn't have a plant. Remind me never to buy peat pellets again. I hate them. The wrapping doesn't decompose, by the way.

I'm going to start some more onions inside, but I let my vermiculite dry out, so I have to soak that some more first.

Raspberries and rhubarb are going gangbusters. There is even a raspberry plant growing out of the bottom of the planter near the rhubarb. Crazy stuff! The apple tree is starting to put out blossom buds. I sure hope we don't have any freezes left!

That's all for now.

Some seedlings go out, some are already out!

Today, I transplanted my cauliflower seedlings outside. I love daffodils! There are even a couple hyacinth starting to bloom. I think they are purple ones. There are some tulips that have hung on, too, but it will be a while before those are in bloom.

Today I started 5 nasturtium, 10 marigold and 10 cosmos.

So far, of the seeds we started on March 24, only two zinnias have sprouted. (One of those had two or three plants.) I'm not sure why we haven't seen the others yet. I had to take the lid off of the seed starter because those two zinnia were about to touch the top.

Nasturtium Dwarf Jewel Mix: 7-14 days to germination, blooms summer to fall, edible flowers (and also leaves?)
Marigold, Safari Mix: 7-14 days to germination
Cosmos, Seashell Mix: 7-14 days to germination
Zinnia, Anniversary: 7-14 days to germination.

The ornamental kale (Crane Bicolor) that we seeded in the planters outside is actually somewhat alive. There are seedlings in most of the spots, but they aren't growing all that fast. That's probably a good thing, though. I'm not protecting them at all.

When it gets warmer, I will be planting morning glory (Heavenly Blue) out by the mailbox and maybe also by the front porch. I'll just direct seed those, though.

First seeds in the garden!

Today, I went out and planted some seeds out in the garden.

Radishes
I planted German Giant Radishes about 2-3" apart in the SW sector of the bean bed. Cherry Belle Radishes went in the SE sector, again 2-3" apart. I figure this batch should be done before or at least around the time I want to plant the marigolds and beans. In a couple weeks, I will plant another round elsewhere in the garden.
German Giant: Ready in 29 days, 22-25 days to maturity, 6-10 days to sprout
Cherry Belle: Ready in 26 days, 7-14 days to germination

Peas
I planted pea (pod type) plants in two rows in the north half of the NE 4'x4' planter using the folding tomato cages straightened out as supports. I also sprinkled with a good helping of soil inoculant. After this round is done, I'm thinking of planting some north of the beans, so that they are in the shade during the heat. I could also plant another round in the fall.
Mr. Big: Ready in 58 days, 58 days to maturity, 7-14 days to sprout

Carrots
I planted a line of carrots on the north end of the SE box (Danver's) and another on the south end of the box (Scarlet Nantes). These should not interfere with the tomatoes and herbs that will go into that box. I tried to leave a gap for the herbs that are going in later. I planted them about 3" apart. Planting carrot seeds was really hard in gusty winds!
Danver's Carrot: 65-87 days
Scarlet Nantes Carrot: 65-70 days

Lettuce
With the intention of staggering lettuce plantings, I planted 16 lettuce pants today. Eight seeds of Green Oakleaf went in on the west side of the NW sector of the SW box. Eight seeds of Red Salad Bowl went into the west side of the SW sector of that box. I planted them about 6" apart.
Green Oakleaf Lettuce: 50 days
Red Salad Bowl Lettuce: 50 days

Onions
I planted a line of green onion seeds on an E-W line in the west half of the SW box. Spacing was about 3/4" apart. The onion seeds I started inside on the 27th of March started sprouting a couple days ago. I plan to start more onion seeds in a few weeks.
White Lisbon Onion (white bunching): Ready in 65 days, 10-15 days to sprout.

Onions started

I stuck 20 onion seeds into a pot of moistened vermiculite this morning. I would be very surprised if those were actually only 40 pounds. Some are wet and I swear they are closer to 80-100lbs.

After doing the planning, I spread the compost out then mixed up the top 6 to 8 inches. The soil is still nice and loose. Last year (I think or was it the previous fall?) I redid the soil because I lined the boxes with plastic in the hopes that the soil wouldn't dry out as fast. As I did that, I turned pretty much all the soil over and decompacted it. All in all, the soil does stay a lot more loose since it isn't being stepped on. But, over time it naturally compacts, particularly the lower sections.

Soon, I'm going to plant green onions, peas, radishes, and carrots. They should be able to handle some frost, which will certainly happen between now and May. May 9 is about the last we should expect a frost. The first frost of the fall should come some time after September 22.

Starting some seeds

My seed orders came and I got some seeds started yesterday!!
I started some peppers and all of the cauliflower. We are about eight weeks out from the average last frost date of May 9.

I think I will be planting 8 cauliflower, but I started 10.

I started 9 Napolean Sweet Peppers and 5 Alma Paprika Peppers. I realized that the Almas have a heat rating of 1 on a scale of 9 versus the Napoleans which are a zero.

I started those in small peat containers with some "seed starting mix" that I had laying around. I'd probably use a different method, but I figured I should use it up. I also have a bunch of those peat pellets I'll start some more seeds in today. I actually like those even less, but needed to use them up. I couldn't bring myself to throw them away. I found in the past that the casing isn't biodegradable, like I thought. I would find the casing in the ground a couple years later, even. So, this year, I might try to cut it off. Although, once the roots poke through, that might be hard.

The peppers can take a long time to germinate, so that will be a wait. I've never grown cauliflower before, so this should be interesting. I've tried broccoli and failed. I think I planted too late.

My friend is starting some broccoli for me, too. I have seeds for it, but she's already started it, so I'll use those. I can save mine for the fall, I guess.

I still want to start a bunch of flowers. Some cosmos for the front of my porch where I had sunflowers last year. I also have some dahlias for the front yard, morning glories for the mailbox, and marigolds for the garden. I should probably also get some nasturtiums. Maybe that companion planting book would have some more ideas.

Rereading the square foot gardening book has been fun. I forgot how much information was in there. Some of it I take with a grain of salt, but a lot of it is good. I think I need to do a better job planning the continuous nature of the garden.

I'm seriously thinking of reviving my hopes of composting. I really don't need all that much for my garden, but it would be nice not to have to buy it every year. I don't know what's in that sacked stuff. Plus, it seems such a waste to have our table scraps going to Sam the Shredder to be burnt in the power plant. It seems like they would be so much more useful and efficient in my garden.

Seeds are in the mail!

Both of my seed orders have been shipped. The one I think I like the best doesn't have a log, so I'm going to do that here and see if it works out!

I'm checking out Growveg.com and Plangarden.com. Both have a free trial period. Growveg has 30 days and Plangarden has 45 days. Plangarden is cheaper, but so far I like Growveg better, slightly.

I'm about to make a couple seed/transplant orders. I'll order most vegetable seeds and transplants through Seed Savers Exchange.
